Formation easycatalog9/9/2023 ![]() In 1976 Robyn Hitchcock formed Dennis And The Experts who would later become The Soft Boys with the placement of Kimberley Rew on guitar. He has many compilations, outtakes, and rarities which are signified with an *. Normally I would not have included The Soft Boys but since the group reconvened for one album in the middle of his career I felt it important to place it within context. I implore any non-fans out there to check out Robyn Hitchcock because there’s a wealth of material in here that is absolutely incredible. He’s certainly not slowing down with last year’s Love From London being followed up recently by The Man Upstairs so I imagine he’ll keep going and surprising until he can’t anymore. Every few years a new generation discovers Underwater Moonlight, and to a lesser degree I Often Dream Of Trains. He’s entered the Adult Alternative years of his career and yet still makes albums worth the time and energy spent seeking them out. I’ve noticed the impact of Robyn Hitchcock has slowed in recent years, where his albums make little dent in a crowded, youthful market. To this day, because some groups and musicians come and go, he likely has the most consistent longevity of any artist in my listening since my formative years. I devoured anything Robyn Hitchcock from there. Again, it was different, and it blew my mind. I sought it out, but couldn’t find that record, but I did locate A Can Of Bees. I learned from a magazine article that Peter Buck found his sound from Hitchcock’s previous band The Soft Boys’ album Underwater Moonlight. It was night and day from the previous song. I remember Madonna Of The Wasps being a gorgeous song but then it went right into The Devil’s Coachmen which was just so weird. fan, tossed me a cassette of Robyn Hitchcock & The Egyptians’ Queen Elvis and said “Listen to this. ![]() to thank for introducing me to Robyn Hitchcock, and it came very early in my music listening. ![]() He’s that good and, remarkably, consistent years later. To this day I believe Robyn Hitchcock should be spoken of in the same regard as The Smiths, New Order, Echo & The Bunnymen or his peers in R.E.M. So why is he considered just a cult act? This one took a while because his catalog is so immense and as it happens in the Completist series I find myself in awe of the quality of a succession of albums in a row which leads me to question why they didn’t find a larger audience. Where to begin with Robyn Hitchcock? He’s been a constant player on the fringes of the music industry, made at least one groundbreaking record (or more depending on who you talk to), flirted with limited greater success, and released a new album an average of every 1.5 to 2 years. ![]()
